Wearable
computers are the ultimate in portable computing.
They
look like science fiction, but they're real PC's available now
for applications where the ultimate in portability is desired.
They are fully functional with the memory and hard disk capacity
to handle off-the-shelf or custom PC software applications.
Imagine
being able to:
- use
an interactive maintenance manual while doing repairs
- access
specifications while inspecting ongoing operations
-
complete QA checklists on the fly
- collect
data while on the move
-
follow a video or computer-based training program while in the
field
-
do online reordering during maintenance
- conduct
inventories while walking through a facility
- ...
and more.
Wearable
Computer Components
The
Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brains behind the wearable
PC. A fully functioning Pentium MMX PC, the CPU includes: Intel
Pentium MMX processor and choice of industry-standard operating
system (including Windows 95, 98 or NT). It is designed to also
run DOS, Unix, or Linux. Up to 128 MB RAM 2.1 or 4.3 GB hard drive
and long life, hot-swappable, lithium-ion battery. The light weight
CPU unit clips onto a vest or belt. It contains ports for connecting
peripheral and power cables as well as PCMCIA cards for network
communications.
Conveniently
worn on your wrist, the full color Touch Screen Flat Panel Display
(FPD) is both an input and output device. The Flat Panel Display
active matrix LCD color VGA serves as a monitor to display information
and as a convenient input device. It uses a touch screen interface
for entering information via pen or hand and can even operate
with voice commands. The Flat Panel Display delivers a crisp clear
image and a choice of displays.
The
Head Mounted Color Display (HMD) allows you to operate the PC
hands-free, giving you unparalleled safety, convenience and productivity.
The HMD uses a head-mounted microphone, ear piece speaker and
works with any standard voice activation program. The HMD can
be adapted to a hard hat or other protective head gear, multiplying
the environments in which the PC increases productivity, without
compromising the safety. The HMD contains: Headset -- Holds the
display unit and the optional video camera. Display Unit -- Projects
an image onto a reflector that displays the image to your eye.
The VGA display measures just 1.1" diagonally, but using special
optics, provides the same full-color, full-screen view as a 15"
monitor seen from two feet. The optional video camera transmits
or records video images. Using this optional digital color camera,
you can capture and transmit still and motion images through a
local area network, a wide area network, on the Internet, or record
images to the PC's hard drive.
The
advanced battery pack is made up of a rechargeable lithium-ion
battery inserted into a battery holder. Compact and lightweight,
the battery yields approximately four to six hours on each charge.
Unlike other batteries, you do not need to fully discharge the
battery before recharging. You can charge the battery at any time
without harm and can recharge the battery approximately 500 times
before needing a replacement. For added convenience, the battery
can be hot-swapped. The battery holder's cable connects into the
CPU's power port to run the PC. The battery charger and an AC
power adapter allow you to plug the PC into a standard wall outlet
and operate the PC in a desktop mode while simultaneously charging
the battery.
ACCESSORIES include an 11 inch Mini desktop, 2-hand Keyboard --
The lightweight QWERTY full-function keyboard comes standard with
the PC. Using the keyboard, you can compose and file a complete
report on-site.
The
Wrist-Worn Keyboard is a lightweight QWERTY full-function keyboard.
It is an activation option for the PC. Using the keyboard, you
can compose and file a complete report on-site.
